3 Keys For Men to live with Purpose

Wild at Heart by John Eldredge is one of the most impactful books I have ever read as a man. In this book, John lays out three core desires for a man’s soul: beauty, battle, and adventure. When I read this book as an 20 year old college student, I did not know it would send me on a pathway that ultimately led me to becoming a counselor and working primarily with men.

Over the years I have worked with hundreds of men and male adolescents. Without fail, I hear common themes coming up for them. These themes, when explored, inevitably come back to the lack of one or more of the three core desires that Eldredge lays out. But, I believe there is something even more foundational to a mans heart than these three core desires. I believe we long for purpose, meaning, and potency.

  1. Beauty

We as human beings long for beauty. Beauty can come in many different forms - art, music, nature, the body, a newborn, food, etc. Beauty is a balm for an aching heart and is necessary in the healing of any emotional, psychological, or spiritual wound. For this reason, beauty cannot be removed from someone’s life without grave danger to their ongoing healing. I have counseled many clients to find ways to build beauty back into their reality

  2. Adventure

  3. Battle
